Side quests are small-scale plots designed to encourage player engagement and enrich the setting of Rubilykskoye. ICly, characters can have direct influence on the game's setting, integrate themselves into the Rubean community, and earn perks for helping out around town. OOCly, side quests are an expansion of the bonus AC system, allowing players to earn plot coins and other rewards that could typically be bought with them.
Here's how it works:
✧ Choose a side quest to embark on from the list of available side quests below. The prompts, requirements, and rewards for each side quest are unique, so be sure to read over the details before submitting a claim.
✧ Claim the quest by posting this FORM to the quest header in the comments. Claiming a side quest means it is no longer available to other players, though you can return a quest to the pool by dropping it or, in some cases, intentionally failing the quest ICly.
✧ After we confirm that your quest is claimed, you have 30 days to complete the requirements. You do not need to wait for us to confirm the claim to begin plotting! Feel free to get started right away, though keep in mind that we may provide additional info about your quest when we verify your claim.
The list of available side quests will typically be updated when the CR meme goes up each month to facilitate easier plotting. All side quests require between 2-5 characters to complete, so you'll need to get others involved - although you do not need to assemble your crew before claiming a side quest. Please just be mindful that quests can only be claimed once, so be sure of your choice before making it official.
Players may only embark on one side quest at a time, even if they play multiple characters in the game. Please take note of this when collaborating with other players! Given the final character headcount is not reported until the end of the quest, we likely will not catch these overlaps until you've already put the work in. You are responsible for tracking your own side quest involvement and we will deny rewards to players attempting to double up, even accidentally.
You may participate in back-to-back side quests, but be sure to submit your proofs for your current side quest before claiming a new one. We prefer that a quest be fully completed (the quest summary is submitted, all involved players have submitted their proofs, and we've sent a mod response verifying the quest's completion) before claiming another quest, but it is acceptable to claim another quest so long as your own proofs have been submitted.
We intend for side quests to serve as springboard for new characters to get involved with the game plot and community. To this end, some quests will be locked to new characters for the first month they are live. Only the character claiming the quest must be new, and we encourage established characters to join up with these quests to help welcome our new characters into the game. Locked quests are usually larger in size (4-5 characters) to give new characters a chance to build/deepen a variety of CR and plot-focused to give them a foothold in the game's story.
New characters are defined as having been in the game for less than six months, starting with their first full month in the game. For example, to claim a locked quest in February, your character's first month in game would need to be September or later. Note that this is measured by character, not by player; second or third characters of longterm players can still qualify as "new". At the beginning of the following month, any unclaimed quests will unlock and become available for anyone to claim.
Completion of a side quest is determined by comment count, and any threads directly related to the quest can be used as proofs. It's acceptable to handwave the quest itself so long as the focal point of any threads used for proofs is the preparation and/or the aftermath. When embarking on a quest with more than 2 characters, you are not required to do a single thread involving every character involved with the quest. Characters can mix and mingle as you please.

Proofs must be submitted via the provided form by the listed deadline, which will be 30 days out from when we approve your claim. Note that you may start plotting and threading as soon as you claim the quest; you do not need to wait for our approval as long as no one else has tried to claim the same quest. However, we may provide additional information about your quest when we verify your claim. Usually, when we plan to provide extra details, we will ask upfront questions in the quest requirements. The extra details will be tailored to your response.
If needed, you can request an extension on the deadline. We're flexible on how much time we'll grant for extensions, so please note in your request how much additional time you feel is appropriate. We will only grant extensions if you contact us before the deadline. It is your responsibility to keep track of your deadline; we will not remind you! If you have not submitted proofs or reached out to us when the deadline passes, your quest will be considered dropped. The outcome of dropped quests will be up to mod discretion, and most will return to the available quest pool so that other players may pick it up. You cannot reclaim the same quest after you've dropped it.
A NOTE ON FAILURE
Players can still reap the rewards of side quests even if their characters don't technically accomplish the mission. We strongly encourage players to consider allowing their characters to fail and the quest to not go as expected. IC failure can range from flubbing small details to outright making the situation worse. You will still receive the OOC rewards of your side quest, even if your character spectacularly bungles the assignment. Your character will receive IC "rewards" as well, though they will likely change to accommodate the mistakes made.
Rewards for side quests will vary, but each quest will include both IC and OOC rewards.
IC rewards are tailored to the quest prompt. Typically, these rewards will be things like reputation gains, setting influences, specialty goods, and unique privileges. For example, a side quest to resolve a conflict between Zlatniki NPCs may result in the faction viewing your character more favorably, and a side quest to assist with a hunting expedition may result in experienced hunters taking the time to mentor your character in the ways of archery and animal tracking. If you opt to have your character ICly fail a quest in part or in full, the IC rewards will likely change to suit the final outcome of the quest.
OOC rewards are larger in scale and usually fall within the bounds of our plot coin system. Many quests will award characters a plot coin. Plot coins can only be gained through the side quests system once per Minstrel round and must be spent before the next Minstrel round as per typical plot coin rules. This means that a given character may hold a maximum of two plot coins at a time. Once you have earned a plot coin from a side quest, you may continue to take on quests with plot coin rewards, however you will be exempt from that particular reward.
Other possible OOC rewards include benefits that could otherwise by bought with plot coins, such as monster curse changes, power gains, IC businesses, NPC threads, and plot secrets. These benefits are tailored to the quest prompts as well; for example, a side quest to resolve an NPC's monster transformation may be rewarded with a power gain to assist your character in aiding the town as such in the future. Players will usually have some say in the exact nature of these boons, as we want the rewards to be true rewards and not impositions.
Most quests will award either a plot coin or a more specific OOC benefit, but some larger quests may award both.
All IC and OOC rewards (including plot coins) will be granted to all characters involved with the side quest. However, note that each quest has a character limit. While other characters may get involved with the storyline of the quest, the rewards are finite and will only be granted to the maximum number of characters as listed on the quest. For example, if your quest's character limit is 2-3 characters, you will need to select 3 total characters (including your own) to receive the rewards.
Side quests are broken into three categories:
- GAME PLOT quests are directly tied to the larger game plot. Quests in this category are typically larger, more involved, and come with greater IC rewards.
- SETTING INFLUENCE quests impact the town and community of the game. Quests in this category are typically lower stakes, but have lasting long-term effects on the setting and reputations with NPCs.
- CURRENT EVENT quests are directly tied to the current in-game event. Quests in this category are only available during the current month and will rotate out with each CR meme. The availability of these quests will vary depending on the month's event and mod bandwidth; some events may not include side quests at all.

One day while bringing a load of lumber into town, JOHAN discreetly pulls you aside with a request. His wife TARA has been behaving strangely these past few weeks. She's been avoiding him, neglecting to sate her zadza and by extension, his. She stays out until near midnight most nights and returns home smelling of blood and earth. He asks that you follow her during one of these late-night outings and see what she's up to. He'd do it himself, but he's afraid of what he might find.

After the string of vandalism these past few months, the pranksters have finally abated, but something even odder is going on at the tavern. A stark white sapling has sprouted up from the newly-reinstalled floorboards in the middle of the main room. The tenacious little tree sprouted without warning, and despite NIKITA's best efforts, the thing just won't budge. Understandably, she wants it gone; it's taking up a fair amount of space in the tavern, and it seems to still be growing. Oh, and to make matters worse? The sapling is surrounded by a small patch of Void. That can't be good... No Rubeans are willing to go near the thing, so Nikita is looking for some Void-touched to find a way to extract the tree and dispose of it.

SERGEI has decided that he has finally had enough of dealing with his Zlatniki brother DAMYAN and has cut out on his own, starting up his own flower stall in the market. However, he doesn't have access to the farms or supplier MARKUS that Damyan used.
So he is asking the Void Touched to go into the forest and collect interesting flowers and foliage - the more with aphrodisiac effects the better! However, the forest is pretty fraught with dangers and the one particular type of flower that Sergei really wants only grows in the depths of a spider nest.

After IANTHE set up a meeting between GILIA and AGAFOKLIYA to talk about land for the Void-touched Farmstead project, the Butter Maiden offered the use of a small plot of her land... but there's a catch. Half the barn is overrun by an aggressive plant. They call it the Diabel's Rope.
With a very deep root system, the only way the Rubeans have found to deal with the plant is through yearly burnings of its core once it stirred from winter slumber. Unfortunately, the false spring woke the Diabel's Rope early and the plant flourished before it could be burned. In order for the land to be usable, the plant must be dealt with.
Agafokliya warns that the Diabel's Rope got its name from its tough, flexible vines the plant uses to defend itself when threatened. Livestock has been found strangled by the plant in previous years, and the plant can be rather... invasive the closer one gets to the core. Agafokliya's usually controlled countenance flushed in memory, but she is simply had enough of dealing with the Diabel's Rope. It's now the Void-touched's problem if they want to lease her land.

It is that fact alone that prevents IANTHE from simply taking what she needs from the unfortunate dead. Sometimes even she colors within society's lines. Consent would be needed. So she does what any enterprising necromancer would do: outsource the task to the eager, opportunistic, depraved, or mercenary among them.
Ianthe requests the legal acquisition of an intact adult human (or Void-touched) skull. No clean-up required; she will strip the flesh from it herself. Any acquired skull is to be brought to her away from the morgue separate from the body to prevent a conflict of interest with her duties as Deathwarden.
Note: Any illegally obtained skulls will still be accepted, though the ones to acquire them may be held accountable as criminals without support from Ianthe.

To that effect, he's been asking around for several someones to compile some information about the gods & worship practices of Void-touched from their respective worlds, and perhaps place this information in the Rubean library for others to learn from. "Of course," he says, "this little project of ours will have to be kept away from disapproving eyes and ears..."

During one particularly raucous night at the tavern, with Vesenya Lovti in full swing, you find yourself sitting at a table next to a loud group of drunks playing some sort of card game. Whether or not you intend to mind your own business, you overhear AVGUSTIN mention a troubling bit of information to his companions: Through the grapevine, he's heard that ERMOLAI has somehow come into possession of one of the lung pieces... and does not intend to return it. What's more, known Zlatniki LYUBOV has discovered this and intends to jump Ermolai tonight as he's closing up at the barber's. According to Avgustin, Lyubov and his Zlatniki co-conspirators don't intend on a clean death... Ermolai is likely in for quite a beating for disrespecting the Duchess so – or at least, that's what Avgustin claims. Who knows if any of this is true?
If it is, though... You could join in on the attack to ensure that the lung piece returns to the Duchess as intended, or, if you're feeling especially rebellious, you could warn Ermolai and help him escape with the piece intact. Or some mysterious third option? Either way, better act fast!

So he is asking the Void Touched to go into the forest and collect interesting flowers and foliage - the more with aphrodisiac effects the better! However, the forest is pretty fraught with dangers and the one particular type of flower that Sergei really wants only grows in the depths of a spider nest.

With a very deep root system, the only way the Rubeans have found to deal with the plant is through yearly burnings of its core once it stirred from winter slumber. Unfortunately, the false spring woke the Diabel's Rope early and the plant flourished before it could be burned. In order for the land to be usable, the plant must be dealt with.
Agafokliya warns that the Diabel's Rope got its name from its tough, flexible vines the plant uses to defend itself when threatened. Livestock has been found strangled by the plant in previous years, and the plant can be rather... invasive the closer one gets to the core. Agafokliya's usually controlled countenance flushed in memory, but she is simply had enough of dealing with the Diabel's Rope. It's now the Void-touched's problem if they want to lease her land.

It is that fact alone that prevents IANTHE from simply taking what she needs from the unfortunate dead. Sometimes even she colors within society's lines. Consent would be needed. So she does what any enterprising necromancer would do: outsource the task to the eager, opportunistic, depraved, or mercenary among them.
Ianthe requests the legal acquisition of an intact adult human (or Void-touched) skull. No clean-up required; she will strip the flesh from it herself. Any acquired skull is to be brought to her away from the morgue separate from the body to prevent a conflict of interest with her duties as Deathwarden.
Note: Any illegally obtained skulls will still be accepted, though the ones to acquire them may be held accountable as criminals without support from Ianthe.

Quest description:
After the void-touched met in October to discuss future plans, a few projects were voted upon. And then nothing happened. Between disappearances, plague, and starvation, these ideas had gotten lost in the muck of survival and zadza. It was time for another push from your unfriendly neighborhood necromancer.
Ianthe is recruiting a small group to put together a void-touched community resource list to connect their fellow void-touched to others with specialized skills/knowledge in the event of an emergency. Once compiled, the list is to be posted in secure but accessible locations written in both Rubean and English.
While there were certain to be void-touched that don't wish to be on the list, Ianthe offers herself to be listed as an example with her specialization in dead bodies and ability to reattach severed body parts.
