Hi Seph! Thanks for the great question. This helps us see how we can clarify the instructions on our application page ahead of the first round.

The formative history section should include summary of at least 3 events either in backstory/history or in the course of the canon storyline that impacted the character in ways that developed their psychology and behavior.

For characters who don't have references to pre-canon backstory, these events should be three story events from their canon that influenced them. We do not recommend relying on headcanon for these. However, in the situation you alluded to (where a character obliquely references something and how it impacted them), you can provide the broad details of it.

If a canon character does not have enough of a storyline or canon information to identify three major canon events that impacted them (either before the start of canon or over the course of its plot), then that might be a character who doesn't have enough canon material to be appable.
